Although golden retrievers are the most popular canine companions, they also have a high risk of dying from cancer. However, one gene that is associated with cancer may also be helping them live longer. In a new study, scientists discover that certain variants of the HER4 gene appear to prolong the life of goldens by two years. Previously, scientists had found that certain mutations in this gene were linked to an increased risk of cancer in male dogs. The authors speculate that this finding may lead to new treatments for cancer in humans.
