In the year of our (un)comfort, 2023, Earth reached new heights of heat, breaking records like a kid on a sugar rush. The global average temperature was hotter than a sauna, with an increase of 1.48°C (2.6°F) compared to the 19th century and 0.60°C (1.08°F) compared to the 1991-2020 average. Not only that, but every single day of 2023 was warmer than 1°C (1.8°F) above the pre-industrial period. And get this, two days in November were a whopping 2°C (3.6°F) hotter than usual! Even the oceans and continents, except for Australia, were like a giant hot tub. Plus, carbon dioxide and methane levels hit record highs, becoming the party crashers of our atmosphere.
