Gizmodo’s owner shuts down Spanish language site in favor of AI translations

Gizmodo owner G/O Media has shut down its Spanish-language site and is now using AI to translate articles.

But the transition to using AI isn’t as smooth as they’d like it to be.

New articles posted on the site now have a disclaimer at the bottom in Spanish saying that its contents have been automatically translated from the original.

Due to the nuances of machine translation, there can be slight differences.

The company also laid off all the editors of the site, who wrote original stories and incorporated Spanish words into their writing.

Many of these stories don’t make it onto the page because the editor doesn’t have the time or inclination to travel to different countries for important news.

AZ Adslzone reports that the team was told via video call of the decision.
