The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has fined Amazon $30.8 million over privacy lapses involving its Alexa assistant and Ring security cameras.
It includes a $25 million fine for breaching children’s privacy laws by retaining their Alexa voice recordings for indefinite time periods and preventing parents from exercising their deletion rights.
The regulator is also seeking a blanket ban on profiting off of children’s data.
Amazon argues that it has an industry-leading privacy program and that the FTC is just making a political stunt.
[via Gizmodo]Update: A few hours later, we have an announcement from Meta about how they’re going to fight back against the FTC’s claim that their privacy program is industry-leading.
