Fermi Paradox: The Exoplanet Hypothesis

The tone of the chapter begins with a discussion of why no alien civilizations have ever made contact with Earth.

The answer to this question, which was posed by Enrico Fermi in 1950, ranges from benign to absolutely terrifying.

There are several possible reasons: 1) they don’t have the technology to make contact yet; 2) they haven’t had the time; 3) they’re too scared; and 4) they just don’t want to be found.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is the Zoo Hypothesis, which proposes that aliens are aware of us but choose to hide themselves from us.

According to the Zoo hypothesis, advanced civilizations deliberately avoid interaction with us because they view the area in which they live as a zoo.

Just as we keep part of our land as nature reserves and leave uncontacted tribes uncontacted, so do they keep away from us?
