FEC considering limiting AI use in political ads

After weeks of back and forth, the Federal Election Commission decides to maybe make rules regulating the use of AI-generated content in political ads.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee, saying that lawmakers should quickly pass new rules regulating this industry and specifically asking for a government licensing program.

But Congress has dragged its feet on approving any rules regulating tech despite the wave of hearings, legislation, and heated statements they’ve released in recent years.

While today’s decision is a step forward, we need the FEC to act now.

In May, OpenAI submitted a testimony to the Senate judiciary committee asking for legislation specific to this kind of technology.

The comments of the report suggest that the commission may police candidates telling lies about their opponents.
