Yo! Hawai’i is home to the longest lava tube in the world, the Kazumura Cave. This massive underground tunnel is 40 miles long and half a mile deep! It’s like a giant crack in the Earth that goes on forever.
The cave was formed by lava flows, and it’s filled with all sorts of crazy drippy formations. It’s also home to a bunch of unique animals that live in caves, like insects, spiders, and microbes.
In the past, the cave was used as a sacred place by the Indigenous Polynesian people. They believed it was an entrance to the underworld realm, and they would bury important people there.
These days, people still use the cave to shelter from the weather or to collect water. It’s a pretty amazing place, and it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re ever in Hawai’i.
