There are at least 15 total – 7 major plates, including the massive Pacific, plus 5-8 minor plates. Recent research says we should count microplates too, formed when fragments break off bigger ones. So the number is fuzzy, but the plates’ motions cause earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountain ranges.
