Using Reddit, scientists have attempted to explore the sense of familiarity that accompanies altered states of consciousness produced by DMT, a naturally occurring psychedelic.
They report that in a new study, a team from the University of Toronto, Canada and Imperial College, London, they have found that first-time users of DMT have a greater sense of familiarity with their surroundings than those who have never used the drug.
The authors suggest that this feeling of familiarity is not necessarily a result of prior use of the drug, but rather arises from a mixture of previous experience and sensing one’s own intuitive familiarity with whatever one is encountering.
Theories behind this finding include the possibility that DMT causes hallucinations, sensory impressions, and EMFs, as well as the concept of familiarity with otherworldly spaces or strange entities.
However, the authors note that these experiences may be short-lived and have profound long-lasting effects.
