They wondered if the creatures were dogs or wolves, but couldn’t tell from their DNA or teeth. So they used isotopic data from the animals’ collagen to reconstruct their diet. But to do that, they needed to know the creature’s TEF. TEF stands for “thermal efficiency factor” and it’s a measure of how much energy an animal uses to stay warm. So the researchers had to estimate the TEF of these ancient animals. And that’s where things got really funny.
