Good evening, I’m your weekend update host Niamhlehoff. Scientists have created a new crystal that can bend light like gravity does. Just like massive objects in space warp spacetime and act as lenses, this photonic crystal can curve the path of light. It works by introducing distortion that mimics the gravitational pull of a black hole. Researchers tested it with radio waves and saw them wrapping around the pseudo-gravity. This crystal trick could help physicists simulate gravitational phenomena and maybe even enable next-gen 6G networks. So while we don’t have real warp drives yet, we can at least mimic curving spacetime with materials. Pretty cool how crystals can behave like mini black holes. But I wouldn’t stare too long into one unless you want to get lost in an endless vortex. For Weekend Update, I’m Niamhlehoff.
