Feeling stressed?
Don’t sweat: Your body is pumping out its own homegrown cannabinoid compounds that help to chill you out.
These are endocannabinoids, which are chemicals similar to THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis, known as cannabidiol.
In a new study, scientists at Northwestern University switch off cannabinoid receptors in the brains of mice when they are under stress, showing that stressed-out mice release less potent cannabinoids from the amygdala, which dampen stress signals coming from the hippocampus.
This finding could lead to new treatments for stress-related psychiatric disorders, according to the authorsOf course, this finding has only been observed in mice so far, but the authors suggest it likely will apply to humans.
