Cleopatra’s handwriting on an ancient royal decree appears on a decree grants tax exemption to Publius Canidius Crassus, a Roman general and consul, for the annual export of wheat and import of wine.

The word ginesthoi — meaning do as I command in Ancient Greek — appears on the decree.

It was allegedly written by Cleopatra herself and appears as a postscript to the decree itself. .

Professor Peter van Minnen believes that it is Cleopatras handwriting that ultimately ended up being recycled as papyrus wrappings for a mummy.

This was not an unusual practice in Ancient Egypt — unwanted papyrus was regularly reused for mummies and remains a valuable source for documents that would have otherwise been lost to history.
