Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Cancellation of Leases

The Biden administration has officially canceled oil and gas leases in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Conservationists and Native Americans celebrate the decision as a major victory for the region and the planet at large.

But it isn’t totally safe yet, as a law requires that a lease sale must go forward by late 2024.

Oil and gas interests will still be able to exploit the Arctic Refuge, however.

Some Republicans are upset about the decision, arguing that the leases were properly acquired through a congressional sale mandated by Congress.

The move was applauded by conservation groups, environmentalists, and Indigenous communities.

Attempts to sell off parts of the Alaskan Arctic to further fossil fuel extraction have been thwarted.

This action undoes an egregious attack on this cherished place and will help to vindicate the rights of Indigenous people and protect vital habitat.

Looking ahead, we hope to see the strongest
