Apple considered a finger-worn controller for the iPhone

Apple’s new Vision Pro headset, which will come later this year, uses both eye-tracking and hand-tracking to control it, but at one point considered a finger-worn input device, according to an article in today’s Power On newsletter.

Gurman says that early in the development of the headset, Apple tested third-party virtual reality controllers from companies like HTC and later, it looked into the finger-worn device .

Indeed, in 2015, a smart ring patent had emerged from the company, though at the time seemed more intended as a general wearable device, not a mixed reality headset.

In the end, Gurman tells us, the company decided that using eye tracking and hand motions to control the Vision Pro was the more elegant solution.
