China is getting ready to implement new rules that will prevent apps from being listed on the iPhone App Store unless they have been approved by the government.
This will force app stores to file with the government, and it will also require them to comply with strict data transfer and censorship requirements.
Right now, Chinese iPhone users can use the App Store to download popular Western apps that are blocked in the country-like Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, and X (formerly Twitter) – and access them by logging in through a virtual private network, or VPN.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple has met with Chinese officials to discuss how the new rules will be implemented and how the changes could affect its Chinese customers.
