Antarctica’s heatwave of 2022

Antarctica is seeing an explosion in the growth of plant life as a result of climate change, and some scientists worry that the ice-covered continent may soon reach its tipping point.”

Due to its harsh conditions, Antarctica has only two native vascular plants: Antarctic hair grass (Deschampsia antarctica) and Antarctic pearlwort (Colobanthus quitensis).

A study published last year shows that these plants have exploded in population across Signy Island, a small subantarctic island in the Orkney Islands of Antarctica.

According to the authors, this rate of growth is closely linked to the warming air temperature warming trend that kicked off in Antarctica during the summer of 2012.

In March 2022, East Antarctica experienced the largest ever recorded heatwave.

recent research has suggested that this ‘uncedented heatwave’ was made 2°C warmer due to climate change.

By the end of this century, heatwaves in Antarctica could be lifted by
