Due to its harsh conditions, Antarctica has only two native vascular plants: Antarctic hair grass (Deschampsia antarctica) and Antarctic pearlwort (Colobanthus quitensis).
A study published last year shows that these plants have exploded in population across Signy Island, a small subantarctic island in the Orkney Islands of Antarctica.
According to the authors, this rate of growth is closely linked to the warming air temperature warming trend that kicked off in Antarctica during the summer of 2012.
In March 2022, East Antarctica experienced the largest ever recorded heatwave.
