In Android 14, Google introduces a new security feature that allows IT administrators to disable support for 2G cellular networks in their managed device fleet.
Previously, the company had offered only one option to do so.
The company explains that 2G networks use weak encryption and lack mutual authentication, rendering them susceptible to over-the-air interception and traffic decryption attacks by impersonating a real 2G tower.
In order to address some of these concerns, Google added an option to enable or disable 2G at the modem level with Android 12 in early 2022.Google explains that the Android Security Model assumes that all networks are hostile and does not believe that they are easy to compromise.
Therefore, it does not recommend that any network traffic be end-to-end encrypted.
Instead, Android establishes that all network traffic should be ended-to -end encrypted (E2EE).
