This week, a U.S. District Court judge rules that artificial intelligence-generated artwork can’t be copyrighted.
She’s ruling against Stephen Thaler and the US Copyright Office in a case involving an image created by his Creativity Machine algorithm.
Howell rules that copyright has never been granted to work that was absent any guiding human hand, adding that ‘human authorship is a bedrock requirement of copyright.
‘Artists using AI as a tool to create new works cannot be copyrighted, according to the ruling.
That said, the court does acknowledge that humanity is ‘approaching new frontiers in copyright, where artists will use AI asa tool to make new work.
